A logical consequence of DEA and SANParks' paradigm shifts, it's no longer about conservation, the debates are about providing benefits for society and then may it be sustainable which means benefits should be protected for future generations. We are in the wrong discourse when we have a concern that these are precedents that will pose a threat to biodiversity. The idea that protected areas are meant to protect biodiversity is no longer, it's about protection of rights to use the flow of benefits from resources. And the trade off here and elsewhere is about different needsin terms of uses such as subsistence, recreational and others.
Well, DEA and SANParks' paradigm shifts are wildly overstating the emphasis on supporting local communities overtly instead of implicitly, IMO. This particular case negatively impacts conservation AND long-term fishery sustainability, and is patently political in nature.

Jill Bunding- Venter,General Manager for the Garden Route National Park (GRNP) puts it like this
Authorities meant to protect both the environment and people living in and around such assets will have to realize the dual function they play in providing benefits for society and also ensuring such are protected for future generations. It will take an uphill internal battle to ‘learn to unlearn to relearn.’ Whilst extreme views are often about an ‘us and them’ situation, authorities must think about the current and future protection of resources.

unlearn conservation quickly, guys

Sorry, Jill....nobody MUST do anything...all SP MUST do is conserve nature. We pay taxes to lots of other departments to uplift communities and manufacture votes.

If conservation areas MUST justify themselves politically and financially, then simply close them down and hand them over to communities....problem solved and we can save a lot of money! :-)
