SA, Mozambique united in fight against poaching
The Limpopo National Park (LNP) rangers have reduced rhino poaching incursions from the Mozambican border by 70% since 2014.
Published: March 7, 2016, 6:24 p.m. by Slindelo Masikane

Poachers started using different areas on the border to penetrate into the park.

Head of the anti-poaching unit in LNP Carlos Pereira says Mozambicans and South Africans are working together in an attempt to prevent poachers from exiting the Mozambican side with rhino horns.

Operations have now shifted to the Western boundary.

Pereira says they are adapting to the changes in strategy from the poachers. There are more than 3000 dedicated rangers, military and police officials working against poaching in Mozambique.

A crucial part of anti-poaching strategy was the criminalization of poaching in 2014.

However, Pereira says they aren't happy with the new law because it only targets poachers and not the syndicate and traffickers.

"The law privileges traffickers, and the traffickers are the reason for this disaster we are facing, a poacher can be recruited anywhere."

Pereira says they are proposing that the law not only fine traffickers but also hand down jail time of between 8 and 16 years.

Mozambique is also in the process of establishing a wildlife crime unit which will specialise in combating poaching and the involvement of communities through the legal system.

LNP is also looking into establishing a wildlife crime unit that will specialise in training rangers and training them to effectively combat poaching, arrest poachers and save wildlife.

Transfrontier area plays vital role in Kruger’s conservation
The safety of Kruger is tightly linked to law-enforcement activities taking place in the neighbouring protected area.

SKUKUZA – Local and international media were taken on a tour this week through the Limpopo National Park (LNP) for an update on developments on this side of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTCA).

In part, management also used the opportunity to dispel some untruths it thinks are prevalent about this Mozambican protected area.

This includes that there are no animals, or that most poachers enter Kruger through LNP, where the fence was dropped between the two protected areas.

Recent census counts pinned both elephant and buffalo populations at over 1 000 animals each in this park, but Peace Parks Foundation project manager for the LNP, Mr Anthony Alexander stressed that the park would never be able to compete with Kruger when it came to game sightings. Rather, the product that it offered was “wilderness”.

The roads here are quiet and untarred, the accommodation facilities unfenced and the presence of other tourists near unnoticeable. Yet, this park is important to South Africa for many other reasons.

Good rain in the north of the LNP has attracted a number of animals from Kruger, offering, for the moment, a safer haven to animals from drier parts.

The safety of Kruger is also tightly linked to law-enforcement activities taking place in the neighbouring protected area.

LNP management has been ongoingly relocating villages out of the park to newly constructed ones outside the park borders. Massinger Velho, one of the stops on the media tour, was one of eight villages being resettled. In total about 1 600 people were affected.

Alexander stressed the importance of large, transfrontier conservation areas such as the GLTCA. “A successful GLTCA makes for a successful Kruger,” he said.

He explained that once all the villages had been moved, the park will form a roughly 75-kilometre buffer zone of rugged terrain that poachers wanting to enter Kruger, will have to move through before reaching the park.

Mr Carlos Lopes Perreira, head of anti-poaching for the Mozambican National Association of Conservation Areas stressed that wildlife and coordinated crime could not be dealt with in isolation, and that they had been adapting their strategies in accordance to the poachers changing theirs.

For example, most now enter Kruger through the western boundary, instead of across the border.

Another interesting chapter from this thesis on the background of the Great Limpopo transfrontier Park:

There are always many ways to explain a problem and possibly none of them is the right one 0*\ Certain problems simply cannot be resolved if not by the passing of time, often a long time.

Police seize rhino horn at airport

MOZAMBICAN police have seized over 76 kilos of rhinoceros horn at Maputo International Airport. Announcing the seizure at a press conference recently, the spokesperson for the Maputo City Police Command, Orlando Mudumane, said the horns were discovered in two suitcases, as they were being put on a flight to Kenya.

“The Mozambican police, in co-ordination with customs, seized two suitcases containing 76.6 kilos of rhinoceros horn and six kilos of lion claws and teeth,” said Mudumane. The owner of the suitcases and their illicit contents has not yet been identified.

Since both African species of rhinoceros, the white and the black, are believed to be extinct in southern Mozambique, it is more than likely that the rhinos from which these horns were taken were poached in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. — AIM
