I thought the ground could be cooler. The tar road is usually warmer.

I think it is a "bird's thing". We have very little open soil at home and often find birds ( red-eye pigeons, doves, mossies, square tail drongos, etc. Even occasionally hoep-hoep ) sunbathing like that on hot sunny days.

Barn Swallows do this all the time ..It gets more common as they swarm and get ready for the long trip back to Europe end March every year

Even today saw a couple of swallows sunbathing on a district tar road here in NZ.
