The fact that all four hooves are affected rules out the possibility of traumatic injury to the coronary band growth point of the hoof , and points to a systemic cause such as a toxicosis.

Similar hoof abnormalities have been reported in cattle with so-called stywesiekte, caused by chronic low grade poisoning from ingestion of Crotalaria spartioides or Crotalaria burkeana.


Laminitis is an inflammation of the coronary band (growth point) of the hoof and may result in hoof deformities. Usually it just affects one hoof, but if the cause is systemic, as in Crotalaria poisoning, it affects all four hooves.

I had posted a pic of this condition in "What Is It?", not knowing it was unusual (pgs 343 - 348), and someone finally figured out it was liminitis. The extra info here is much appreciated. :ty:
