The next day I wanted to look for the lions again and before I even came to the S125 I saw them lying beside the tar road, this time in the pouring rain. It was nice to see them again but soon more cars arrived and the lions had enough. Slowly they walked down to Kumana and there I saw them for the last time.

I continued to go South and turned into the Vutomi road. At the waterwhole I saw a lioness with 3 very small cubs. I think they were still very young and maybe the lioness was on her way to introduce them to the pride. The lioness didn't seem to be in best shape, but maybe she only was hungry. After a while she picked up the smallest of her cubs and this was the first time ever that I saw one of the big cats carrying a cub in her mouth O\/

Back on the S36 we were just driving a few km’s and met this nice bull

-
Image

Then driving the S36 and the…. Wowwwwwww… between the junction S33 and “Lugmag” dam this beauty not far from the road but a bit hidden after some bush…
Hoping he did not run away and showing himself better

-
Image
-

After Tuskers one of my very very favorite animals. A male Sable

-
Image
-

He was relaxed and not really in a hurry and “walking” with him I could capture him

-
Image
-

End of the afternoon… light was beautiful and walking away from us but then standing still and turning his head watching us.

-
Image
-

Last picture of him… just after this “shot” he really took off into the thicker bush.

Wake up call 04:00 am…. Packing and ready to go… just outside Satara thick fog, we almost could not see more then 50 meters. Not that nice. Getting close to the turn off to S33 we saw smaller animals on the road… too much fog to recognize them, but then smiling. Talking about the “devil” in Satara ended up in another sighting with Painted Dogs.

-
Image
-

We could make a few shots before they disappeared in the bush

-
Image
-

and

-
Image
-

-
Image
-

A few moments later a lucky bushbuck crossed the road, not seen by the painted dogs because of the fog…

Some pics of Kumana by Pumbaa, 2014:

Next stop as always when travelling to Satara was at Kumana dam and we had luck not only that from now on until the rest of that day the sun came out more and more but also it were a lot animal activity to be seen. A couple of waterbucks were running around enjoying life,

Image

a lone wildebeest was lying in between the many impalas and lots of hippos were sleeping in the water in the summer sun and it got hotter and hotter with each minute now.

Image

We realized also a lot of herons on their nest breeding in the tree right in the middle of the dam so it was indeed never boring as there was nearly everywhere something to be seen.

Image

My favourites here were the hippos as they were lying motionless in the water with even head under water so only the huge bum was visible

Image

and sometimes the head got lifted only to yawn extensively

Image

and we had luck as one of the huge hippo mom had got a little one and same was obviously a bit bored and wanted to play but mom could not get animated.

Some Kumana Dam pics by pooky- 2015:

We came out at Kumana dam again. Plenty of game there - and plenty of cars - spot the lion - top left :-)

Image

The game seemed oblivious to the lion - but I suppose the knew that they were there :O^ :O^

Image

The buffalo were watching the lions

Image

A starling was in the bush next to the road - a distraction while we spent about 2 hours waiting for the lions to
do something. They kept threatening but nothing happened. There were other lion on the other side of the road,
but they weren't participating in anything.

Image

Image

A giraffe wanted to cross the road but there were too many cars and the smell of lion probably also put him off :O^

We decided to go back to Kumana to see if the lions had made a kill. But the buffalo and lion were all gone.

We found this big blind worm (I think) on the wet tar. Cameron was very excited and of course wanted to hold
it 0*\

Image

In the big trees around Kumana the baboons were just waking up. Some were not in a hurry to get out of 'bed' lol

Image

Someone got out of bed on the wrong side this morning and wasn't a happy chappie. Quite a spectacular sighting
with lots of noise and splash ^Q^

An hyena was scavenging around an old buffalo carcass below the dam
