Fires in KNP

Post by PJL »

Sounds like there are uncontrolled fires affecting areas around Sabi Sands and Skukuza. Phabeni Gate was closed earlier apparently due to the fires.

Last Sunday around 16h00 the sky was dark around Satara due to fires in Mozambique. On the other end it seems that KNP fire brakes are done and they where repaired for fires.

LATEST FROM KNP:
FIRES IN THE KNP

The Kruger National Park (KNP) is currently experiencing four fast moving fires since Friday, 12 September 2014 due to the hot weather conditions in the area. A run-away fire jumped over the border on Friday from Mozambique into the KNP; burning areas south of Olifants River, Houtboschrand, N’wanetsi until Tshokwane; however it is now under control.

Yesterday around lunch time, another fire came from one of our concession areas on the western side of the Park. Two fires started today around Phabeni Gate areas as well and are still raging.

“We are concerned about the hot weather conditions which we have been experiencing this week as they cause these fires to be difficult to control and can cause damage to the environment, said the KNP’s General Manager: Communications & Marketing, William Mabasa.

Our conservation staff members are working day and night to try and manage all the fires at the moment.

“We would like to advise the public to be on the look-out for fires in the Park and to refrain from starting more, as the dry and windy conditions cause these fires to be fast, hot and out of control”, concluded Mabasa.

This press statement was issued by SANPARKS.

Fire raging in Sabi Sands
2014-09-18 16:14

Cape Town - A bushfire is raging out of control in the Sabi Sands reserve bordering the Kruger National Park.

A person who answered the phone at Sabi Sands Game Reserve says everybody, including the management are out fighting the flames. A team from Working on Fire is helping.

Staff at Londolozi Game Reserve , situated near Sabi Sands confirmed that a fire was burning. She told News24 all management staff were out attended to the blaze, which was quite close to the reserve.

“We have not evacuated the lodge, but are attending to the matter,” the staff member said.

SANParks spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli told News24 that rangers were on the ground battling the flames.

“They are working against strong winds, as the fire has moved north to Skukuza,” he said.

Thakhuli said he was unable to say whether lodges around the area were affected as yet. He could also not confirm the size of the fire.

A tweet from Kym Argo conveys the magnitude:
