The job creation is rather limited IMO and will not last for long -O-

Quite a good programme! \O

There are several things that are missing, though, in addition to Lis' points:

The big dams like Kanniedood and Sirheni broke during floods anyway.

Most big dams have fish ladders and/or spillways which allow for fish migration as required.

Fish ladders can easily be added to existing dams. (Job Creation)

The fisheries research was initiated decades ago by the same people who built the dams.

SANParks have closed and reopened various waterpoints depending on drought conditions, which makes a bit of a nonsense of the "natural state" argument.

The closure of waterpoints was originally to increase rare antelope numbers in the North, as repeatedly stated earlier on this thread. Then things changed to naturalisation and now job creation? :-? 0-

The "new" loops to natural waterpoints are actually few and far between, normally cramped, and involve clearance of riverine bush and resultant disturbance and erosion potential. On sees fewer animals unless it is REALLY dry, as there is a greater distribution of pools along a river course.

It is a moot point to say windmills are "where they shouldn't be". Almost all are close to existing seasonal streams and drainage lines, they just provide water for a number of extra months.

One of our FB members had this to say:

Duane Jacobsz I find it very interesting that when talk of culling elephant happens, people lose their minds, yet, when baby elephants die from thirst, as a population control method, everything is fine and dandy.
If you posted that the KNP were culling elephant, this post would have had hundreds of comments, in the nearly 24 hours it's been published, but starve baby elephants, and there is not even a murmer.

Vanessa Butland Gueli So true Duane. Do you think SANparks is doing the wrong thing here?

Duane Jacobsz Venessa, I think it's nice in theory, but impractical in reality. Spatial-temporal management only works on paper. This style of management, whilst highly experimental, lacks several crucial factors. 1) It is unclear how large an area must actually be for this to work. 2) Although a population can be 'stable', it can also be grossly over-populated. 3) The continued desertification by elephants are not addressed and Acacia woodlands keep diminishing - this is contrary to most Conservation goals, in terms of loss of biodiversity. 4) A valuable resource is being under utilised. 5) Removal of younger generations have unknown social impacts, over the whole population. In comparison to culling where only selected animals are removed. 6) Public participation makes this style of management untenable, as the public outcry over thousands of animals dying of thirst and hunger in times of drought leads to calls for action and mitigation, rendering it useless as a population control method. Keep in mind that there has been numerous calls from KNP management to government, in recent years, to resume culling, despite this style of management. It also requires us to accept that the massive elephant population is a natural phenomenon, which of course, it is not. The advent of Spatial management did not make concepts such as Carrying Capacity disappear.

:ty: Flutty!

With the "entertainment" program of Sanparks in mind who knows if all this talking about "back to nature" is not for the benefit of people like us. It is something new in the mouth of a Sanparks spokesperson :-? Protests against their non-consevation minded developments are all over the internet.

It is a fact though that they are getting rid of the artificial water holes :-? I wonder if they have not chosen a wrong moment with the global heating getting worse from year to year -O-
