My take on this (for what it's worth) is not so much about "do they realize / know what they have?" so much as "do they care about conservation or understand the enormity of the task at hand"?

I phrase this as a rhetorical question because I firmly believe the short answer is "No".

They do not have a clue? And if they do, then I don't think they care enough to do anything about it, or possibly they just lack the knowledge of what to do. From the very top down, with a few shining exceptions, I think SANPARKS is run by incompetent people who are there for unknown reasons.

Do they grasp the enormity of what they are entrusted with? I don't think so. Given the lack of action it is glaringly obvious to me that they are in this for completely the wrong reasons. They are unable to effectively combat the massive surge in Rhino poaching, still after many years, they fail to control speeding and apparently little is done about the speeding delivery vehicles, unless there is a massive exposure such as the recent case where several Impala were killed.

The scary part is will they still be around when paradise has been lost? Will they stand up and hold themselves accountable for the monumental failure that is sure to follow?

I just don't think so. 0= O/

"They" is a problematic pronoun in this case...

I think a significant number of lower level staff do realise what they have, but the higher level staff have a different interpretation regarding commercialisation and politics and money! O:V
