Waste Management and Recycling in and around Kruger National Park

Post by Richprins »

I found these old pics a friend sent me a few years ago. The Recycling depot at Skukuza handles most of Kruger's recyclables, and it is a lot!

A success story, IMO! \O

(There is not much one can do about the animals, these pics were taken on a Sunday, I think.)

I saw a post on FB recently where someone noticed that even though waste is separated at the camps by visitors, when it is collected it is all dumped into a truck together!! O**

I have heard that too and also in the pics it is all mixed up and very untidy.

As far as I could gather the operation is big, well-organised and effective, with marked storage areas for the sorted items (glass, plastic, cans etc.)

I doubt any such site in the bush will be very neat. lol

I am impressed! \O

Maybe they mix it all up so there are more jobs for people at the depot! O**

It is most likely easier to get impressed where you live, than where I live O**

Our recycling here in the UK is also a bit hit and miss.
At home, we have one bin for general waste, one bin for garden waste, one bin for newspapers, one bin for plastic, cardboard and metal.(we have a whole family of bins)

And until a few years ago, the cardboard used to go in with the garden waste, but then for an unknown reason, that was no good, so they changed to what it is now. -O-

If they find the wrong substance in the wrong bin ( for eg paper in the plastic) then they won't collect that bin.

And finally, they only collect every 2nd week.

My inlaws who live in another suburb (under a different council) put their newspaper in with the plastic etc 0-

We have a "General Household waste" bin in the kitchen and a special container where to put it close by, which get emptied twice a week. Paper container, glass container, pet container and Garden Waste container all in the same place. There is also one for used oil somewhere. Twice a year collection of bulky waste in a parking space where it gets divided. Twice a year collection of dangerous/poisonous stuff like paint and strange liquids etc.
