Snaring is as old as conservation itself. The theory is that this is mostly subsistence poaching for starving communities. However it is now on a commercial scale, IMO. Greed.

This lioness was caught in a snare, although park officials and well informed sources tell me that she has been treated by a vet and the injury apparently looks worse than it is and that she seems to be healing

If they burnt them, means that they were not out for lions. Strange though that they both ended up in snares Some more info would be enlightening.
