Media Release: SANParks Head Office Closed After Staff Member Tested Positive for COVID-19
29 June 2020
South African National Parks (SANParks) head office in Groenkloof, Pretoria had to close its doors today (Monday, 29 June 2020) as a precautionary measure after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus).
SANParks Acting Head of Communications, Rey Thakhuli confirmed the closure and said the offices are expected to reopen on Thursday, 2 July 2020. "This means no one will be allowed in the building before Thursday, 2 July as a deep cleaning exercise is now underway". Thakhuli said guests who have been making amendments to their bookings are requested to expect delays as the call centre staff will not be in the office until the mandatory period of decontamination is concluded. The call centre staff will, however, work remotely and continue to be available by email.
He further reiterated that all precautionary measures, social distancing rules and additional sanitation are in place at all our facilities and we will continue to vigilantly implement these to protect both our staff and guests to our facilities.
SANParks, CEO Fundisile Mketeni wished the affected colleague a speedy recovery. "I would like to encourage any of the staff members or their immediate families feeling sick to utilise our 24 hour COVID-19 Counselling services. We are working hard in ensuring that staff and guests are safe at all times".

Media Release: National Parks Still Not Open For Overnight Stays
03 July 2020
South African National Parks (SANParks) today advised customers that it has not opened for overnight accommodation as per Level 3 lockdown regulations on leisure and interprovincial travel.
Day self-drives in national parks continue to be permissible for residents of the various provinces that the respective National Parks are located in; visitors are urged to book online and to observe all COVID 19 health protocols while in the park â including exiting the park with as much of their refuse as hygienically possible.
Fundisile Mketeni, SANParks Chief Executive Officer acknowledged that the organization is aware that many domestic tourists are eager to enjoy the tranquillity offered by national parks and that they would like to extend the current self-drive opportunities to overnight stays. He urged tourists to be patient until leisure travel and interprovincial travel regulations are implemented.
All overnight bookings for July have therefore been suspended; the public will be advised in due course when bookings open. The organization advised those with overnight bookings to delay their travel and not cancel.
Mketeni concluded by advising South Africans to continue supporting government efforts to minimize the impact of COVID 19 by adhering to lockdown rules. "We are seeing increasing infection numbers and regrettably the loss of lives as well. This is a reminder that a decision to open up our facilities has to be well-considered to ensure our colleagues, tourists and their friends and families' health are not compromised. We all have to be patient and trust the processes and decisions of our leaders during this difficult time, we will announce the dates for the reopening of accommodation bookings in due course".

Easier to say than to doThe organization advised those with overnight bookings to delay their travel and not cancel.
There will not be enough overnight visitors until the interprovincial travels are allowed i.e. not worth the trouble to get camp staff back on work

Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park open for self-drives
08 July 2020 - 11:48
BY ERNEST MABUZA
Self-drive excursions for day visitors will be permitted at the Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park from Wednesday.
“We appreciate that after three months of confinement, people are keen to engage with nature - and the excitement shown by enquiries from our loyal visitors is encouraging,” said South African National Parks (SANParks) CEO Fundisile Mketeni.
SANParks said the opening of national parks for self-drive excursions was done under the strictest health protocols to safeguard staff and visitors.
In this section of the park, commonly known as Cape Point, a maximum of 250 vehicles will be allowed in each day.
However, no more than 75 vehicles will be allowed in at any given time.
Daily operating hours are between 8am and 4pm.
“A Covid-19 health related questionnaire to be completed upon arrival at the gates, as well as mandatory temperature screenings will be done by our staff. Visitors with a temperature screening of 37.4°C and above will not be allowed access.
“Wearing of face masks is compulsory. No mask, no entry.”
SANParks said permitted activities include self-drive vehicles, limited to three people per vehicle of the same household, and motorbikes limited to one person per bike.
Activities such as surfing, cycling, fishing, hiking, walking, trail running, launching of vessels, braaing and picnicking are not permitted.
“We encourage our guests to adhere to the speed limits and stop only to take pictures from their vehicles and only in designated areas.”
