For example, try explaining to those children in a few years' time why rhino have disappeared in their area, commercialisation of their "Golden Goose" Kruger has led to a tourism fiasco with foreigners going elsewhere and locals being priced out of the market and going elsewhere....

I really do not have a problem with Sanparks, that they
feel committed to local ethnic groups surrounding their
parks. In fact such actions, on their behalf, should be
very much respected.

I honestly believe that SAN parks possess that power and
finance to do good to local communities surrounding.

It was and still just a matter of time where societies
come head to head with conservation!!!!

For those in the conservation realm a rather challenging
task!! However to go about flashing big bucks and
promissory notes,....

No I am afraid it does not go down well with me, not if
we take .govs current track record into account!!!

I still strongly believe that conservation should be removed
from .govs book of rule!!!

To much doubt currently filling the air to the outside world,

of ineptness and abuse in all sorts of other situations!!

Kruger if ever and I mean ever, "You managed through simply
to survive"", then that can only be attributed to you yourself and
only!!!!

Definitely not because you have a custodian promising,!!
Go well Kruger 'cause I know you can!!!

Agreed, H.!

I think a simpler and more canny way would have been for SANParks to have approached the Departments of Environmental Affairs, Education and Public Works years ago to say:

"We, as a parastatal organisation, would like you to inform/remind all communities on the borders of Parks that we are conserving our natural heritage, despite a decrease in funding from Government. We are doing our best to assist regarding environmental education initiatives within our Parks, but financially speaking we cannot divert funds to your areas of responsibility, as our funds are primarily generated to ensure our core mandate of conservation."

SANParks hands over science lab to Galeshewe school

10-9-2013
Galeshewe – Learners at Emang Mmogo Comprehensive School in Galeshewe in the Northern Cape will now find the subject of science a whole lot more interesting now that their school boasts a laboratory.

The science laboratory was officially handed over to the learners and community on Tuesday as part of South African National Parks’ (SANParks) corporate social investment programme initiated to support community development, educational infrastructure and enterprise development amongst other things.

Prior to the new laboratory, the school was using one of the classrooms as the laboratory with no water or materials and, according to learner Gaolatlhe Moemedi, they relied only on textbooks to learn the subject.

“With the new laboratory we will be able to do experiments and practicals,” the Grade 11 pupil told SAnews.

Northern Cape MEC for Education Griselda Cjiekella thanked SANParks for the laboratory, saying it was an important tool for learners.

“Students must be exposed to science-related subjects. Science gives learners more opportunities,” she said.

Cjiekella called on the private sector companies to partner with the provincial government in improving education. “Government alone cannot succeed,” she said.

SANParks is also committed to a five-year partnership with the Northern Cape Education Department to provide mobile library services to schools in the province.

SANParks Managing Executive Dr Nomvuselelo Songelwa said the first mobile bus and learning materials are expected to be handed over in February 2014. “We will provide one mobile library bus per annum for the next five years to the province,” she said.

School principal Hilton Brooker told SAnews that he hoped the laboratory would in turn increase the science pass rate from 48 percent to 70 percent. “We hope the learners will do much better,” he said.

SANParks has in the past done a similar initiative in Mbaula village in Limpopo and in Mpumalanga.

According to Songelwa, plans are underway for a similar initiative in the Eastern Cape and in other parts of the country. – SAnews.gov.za

Found this interesting bit of info:

The Commission was asked whether it was aware that SANParks chose not to pay the Tourism Marketing South Africa (TOMSA) levy and had said that it would rather invest the funds in communities.

HOW MUCH IS THE LEVY?

Essentially, TOMSA levy collection constitutes paying over 1% of each confirmed booking towards the TOMSA fund. Note that collection of the TOMSA levy is voluntary and the amounts paid do not constitute a tax to the business. The levies are paid over to the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA), the administrators of TOMSA.

Media Release: SANParks announces new restaurants and key Public Private Partnerships
Date: 30th October 2013

South African National Parks (SANParks) today announced the successful bidders for the provision of restaurant and retail services at various national parks under its management. The announcements were made at the organisation’s headquarters in Pretoria following weeks of adjudication which began with tender processes.A new retail agreement was signed between SANParks and Tourvest for operations in the Kruger National Park (KNP), Tsitsikamma and Addo Elephant National Park.According to the CEO of SANParks Dr David Mabunda, this was done mainly to improve tourists shopping experiences and to upgrade the shops and make them eco-friendly.

“SANParks has placed focus on value for money for all clients in appointing Tourvest”. The organisation also embarked on a tender process to appoint operators for restaurants in the KNP.  The bidders had several obligations to meet, such as operating, development and refurbishment requirements. They had BBBEE targets to meet as well as environmental obligations.

It was announced that in the KNP’s, Lower Sabie; Olifants and Letaba camps Mugg and Bean restaurants will be fully operational from March 2014, while the Pretoriuskop and Satara rest camps will have Wimpy restaurants with operations expected to commence also in March 2014. The Skukuza Selati restaurant will be operated by Ciao! and are expected to start operations in December 2013 and the main camp restaurant and take away will be serviced by Cattle Baron and Bistro. Operations will start in May 2014 because of extensive refurbishment.

Details were also given of refurbishments and timelines for the Skukuza Airport after an earlier announcement that airport will be serviced by the Skukuza Airport Management Company, a consortium consisting of Airlink; Federal Air; Lion Sands and Community Development Trust. The consortium will operate the airport for ten years from the commencement of operations. The service will operate under strict environmentally acceptable conditions. Hours of operations will be limited to between 9H00 and 15H00. Runway refurbishment commences on the 4 November. The terminal refurbishment will start early in 2014 with flights expected to commence on the 2 June 2014 from OR Tambo International.

Dr Mabunda congratulated all the newly appointed operators and expressed his satisfaction that all proper channels were followed. “I look forward to rave reviews from our clients on service, convenience, satisfaction and value for money, we will as always monitor the performance of our new partners and look forward to a mutually benefitting relationship’ concluded Dr Mabunda.
