I have never camped in KNP (with my kids), although many times with my folks as a kid, but have camped at almost all the coastal spots and dams in KZN with my clan, so a veteran camping family.
Due to the runaway prices in KNP I’m going to have to consider camping there in the future and the only reason I haven’t until now is the mission involved to get all the kit there from KZN (family of 5)
I have cruised through all the camping sections south of Shingwedzi many times to check things out and my personal favourites are Balule and Maroela, due to the semi bush camp feel and there is good game viewing in the area.
Tsendze looked cool, but I hate the Mopani area for game viewing.
Below is a list of camps that offer camping, please have your say with reasons (Maybe mods could create a poll )
Berg-en-Dal
Malelane
Crocodile Bridge
Letaba
Lower Sabie
Tsendze
Balule
Maroela
Pretoriuskop
Punda Maria
Satara
Shingwedzi
Skukuza

Re: Best Place to Camp in KNP
My say with reasons...
The worst of the lot for camping by far is Lower Sabie!!! It is too regimental, small sites and NO bush atmosphere!
The plus side must be the game viewing, but that is also lost due to the amount of cars in or out of season.
The best by miles is Tsendze!!! Great atmosphere, no monkeys or baboons giving you problems, the best camp staff that Kruger has on their payroll and plenty privacy created by natural bush. When you are there you are part of the bush, not just a visitor.
Balule used to be my favourite until Tsendze was established a few years ago.
The game sightings might not be as plentiful as in the south, but when you are at one, it is yours and not much chance of another vehicle spoiling it for you.
With kids, a great place, if they understand quiet rustic camps, you can always pop up to Mopani for a swim during the heat of the day, all legal as Tsendze is part of Mopani.

Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

You need to vote Sprocky
Does that also mean that if one is staying at Maroela or Tamboti they can pop in at the Orpen poolSprocky wrote: you can always pop up to Mopani for a swim during the heat of the day, all legal as Tsendze is part of Mopani.

Voted!
I am not sure but it should. Garth at Mopani told me himself that all guests at Tsendze were welcome to use the facilities at Mopani as they fall under one camp.Bushcraft wrote:Does that also mean that if one is staying at Maroela or Tamboti they can pop in at the Orpen pool

Yes Maroela and Tamboti have use of Orpen pool.
I enjoy Letaba camping and Balule. Havent been to Tsendze yet.

Never camped in Kruger, and haven't really looked at the camping sites. But from driving past the Lower Sabie camping area it looks so cramped. Shingwedzi camping area looked nice.
