Been there a few times. Lovely quiet place but unfortunately not free from strings of toiletpaper as for many other places in KNP  Can't for the life of me figure out why I did not stop there during our recent visit to Shingwedzi 0*\ Also accessible for those using a wheelchair \O

Seeing that you're busy uploading pics, how about a quick Trip Report?

;-)

Twigga , herewith a " little " TR , featuring some ellies at Nyawatsi hide . Starting off with narrative , and following on with a lot of pics . So please be patient while I post those pics over the next few hours . Here goes :

30 Minutes of Elephants

We did not proceed immediately after the herd had crossed the road , but waited a few more minutes in case there were perhaps be a few stragglers still following behind them .
We had left Shingwedzi camp earlier that morning , as usual , as soon as the gates opened , and were now travelling slowly down the S50 , stopping at viewpoints along the river , leasurely making our way south . About 15 minutes earlier , we had stopped at Dipeni , and read the copper plaque telling us that this is where , in times gone by , recruits bound for the Witwatersrand goldmines , were “ dipped and disinfected “ , after crossing over from Mocambique , before they were transported away . Can you believe it ?????
( Oh , by the way , the copper plaque has since disappeared – maybe stolen ? )
We were now surrounded by Mopani trees , and had come onto an elephant herd , grazing next to the road , and waited for them to move away , before proceeding . They had babies with them , and the matriarch , also with a tiny little guy at heel , and attended by a couple of older “ girls “ , had suddenly decided to move off , and the rest of the herd had followed in silence .
We were on the point of also moving on , when out of the bushes first came a young bull , and shortly on his heels a bigger one , who , when he saw us , turned to look , sniffing the air with his trunk , flapping his ears , and then just stood there , glowering in our direction .
Positioned about 60/70 meters from him , and using binoculars , I could see long “ tears “ running down the sides of his face , meaning he was in musth , so , we just waited some more ; and keeping the Landy in reverse gear , just in case he decided to investigate us close-up .

He started moving off , but instead of into the bush , just straight down the road , with us following slowly behind . Every now and then he would stop , look back at us , before proceeding on his way .
After following him for about 500 meters , he decided he had intimidated us enough , and moved into the bush . We continued cautiously , and after another 500 meters or so , came to the turn-off to Nyawutsi birdhide – a great favourite , which we always visited when we stay at Shingwedzi .
Stopping outside the hide , we could hear a lot of elephants trumpeting , shouting and generally making a lot of noise. Realising that they were probably heading our direction , we quickly got out of the Landy , went into the hide before the ellies got there .
We did not have long to wait for them to start arriving . They were a rowdy lot , and within a couple of minutes , the place was filled with loud , raucous , shouting and screaming elephants , first having a drink , then plunging into the pool of water , dunking each other , all just a few meters in front of us .
And every now and then , it seemed as if a new small family group arrived , and they were greeted with more shouting and touching and trumpeting . A really joyful scene .

The matriarch and her teenager “assistants “ , always seemed to keep an eye on little baby boy , keeping between him and the waters edge , and although he was under and amongst the bigger legs all the time , they made sure that he did not get too close or to fall in the pool .
The rocks at the side of the pool were quite slippery , and one teenager kept on being bumped back into the water every time he tried to get out .
In the meantime , old Grumpy , the bull giving us , did not bother with the water . He just kept on walking around , thrashing bushes , and giving us the evil eye where we were sitting in the hide , just a few meters away .
New family groups arriving , after being greeted , were given their turns at the water .
A couple of youngsters , lay down and enjoyed a few moments of warmth in the sun . One of them really enjoyed it , turning and squirming on the ground , and generally let it all hang out .
Then , they all just left , quietly , without making any further noises or sounds , with one of the young bulls , leisurely making his marks , and also leaving .
Amazing , excitement and action , and all over within a very short 15 or 20 minutes from the time they arrived , until it was all quiet again .
That's Nyawutsi , a place of magic happenings :O^
