The new and completely transformed Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site opening October 2016

Date: 2016-09-22

A visit to South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park is a magnificent experience, with its wealth of wildlife, colours, sounds and beauty. Besides game-viewing and learning about the country’s extraordinary natural heritage, there’s a new and delightful way of getting a literal taste of the Kruger Park!

The new and completely transformed Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site, opening 1 October 2016 offers visitors to the Park a unique and delicious way of unwinding. Prepare your food yourself on a gas skottel (which can be hired from the trading post, together with essentials like bacon, eggs and fresh bread), or opt for an authentic wood fire meal - South Africa’s best-loved cuisine, grilled at the base of a large stone chimney – our one-of-a-kind braai monument. Alternatively, order and take the food with you as delicious padkos for your journey through the Park. Whichever way you prefer to eat, Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site offers a different and delectable spread that cannot be missed!

Situated just an hour away from Skukuza and Satara camps, the picnic site was established as a ranger’s post by Stevenson-Hamilton, the first warden of the Kruger National Park in 1928. It was then named after an old Shangaan chief in the area – Chokwane. Today it offers comfortable stoep-style seating under the dappled light of a new structure, while the rest of the site is dominated by a huge sausage tree (Kigelia africana) that is home to many interesting and delightful creatures, just waiting to interact with you at any given opportunity. This gentle bush stopover provides the perfect place to pause for your ablution needs in a facility that is exceptionally well cared for and maintained.

Stretch your legs and let the children run around and breathe in the clear, crisp bushveld air. Take your time to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings while relaxing over a delicious breakfast, lunch or tea from our fabulously, unmistakable South African menu. We’ve created a range of authentic meals – the hearty, comforting and mouthwatering “soul food” that Africans have loved for centuries.

Bush Breakfast, complete with eggs, boerewors and coal-toasted “potbread”. Or good old piping-hot, melt-in-your-mouth jaffles, filled with cheese, Peppadews and Mrs Ball’s Chutney (one of South Africa’s most iconic brands). Boerie rolls with spicy tomato sheba and chips or – for a true bushveld variation – kudu wors rolls, homemade pies, delectable frikkadels or braaied lamb chops with South African staples like stywepap (stiff maize meal porridge) and tamatie smoer. Everything on the menu is ideal for satisfying an appetite after hours of driving.

If typical South African meat is not your thing, you can also choose from our range of freshly prepared salads and finish your meal with traditional treats like homemade milk tart or a fire grilled Rolo-filled marshmallow sandwich or pineapple skewers dusted with cinnamon, pepper & brown sugar: they’re true South African delights.
You cannot leave without tasting our unique & exclusive Tshokwane African coffee blend, served by our experts Roasters - Green Bean. Or opt for our bush-style, freshly percolated Moer coffee, brewed over the coals, for a strong, satisfying wake-up.

While you let your meal settle, enjoy watching the antics of our resident wildlife, who’ll be watching you watching them. Please don’t feed them: they have plenty of their own favourite food to graze on! Be aware that feeding them is not an act of kindness and we implore all who visit Tshokwane to help us protect our precious wildlife. Together with SANParks we aim to make Tshokwane a waste-free site. Please support this important initiative and take all your rubbish away with you.

Last but not least, take time to browse the shelves of the Tshokwane trading post, where you’ll find a different array of unique souvenirs, Tshokwane branded clothing, picnic goodies and much more. The quirky decorated trading post & its contents, is bound to bring a smile to both young and old.

To top off your visit, you could win one of two hand crafted Tshokwane | Melville & Moon Limited Edition picnic baskets, filled with goodies! See in store for more details. A new day is dawning at Tshokwane Trading Post & Picnic Site and we invite you to experience the kind of Kruger Park picnicking you’ll never forget.

This new company is very keen and organised vs the previous bunch, and have proved themselves at Afsaal, I think?! \O

BTW, huge money to be made, so expect a backlash from tender people at some stage... :O^
