Thanks Pumbaa, It was dream for us too, but we gave up some years ago so it was such a big surprise we just did not move or act immediately. I think we could see them because it was a couple and paying a bit less attention. They were so shy and the female jumped away in a split of a second , just Lucky we could capture the male. :-)

Aat & Elly -04- Eland (part 1)

Post by aat »

*** Travel Tales ***
Trip to Kruger NP 2018 (March 28th > April 19th) New series of Stories

04 – Eland (1)

Time again for next story:

As the title says, this story is about the Eland antelope. Every trip or stay in Kruger has a surprise and this time we have seen an incredible number of Eland antelope.
Several years ago we were very lucky to see the big group of Eland north of Shingwedzi.
This time we stayed about 5 nights in Shingwedzi and one of these days we went up for a nice picnic at Pafuri picnic place.
On the way back to Shingwedzi we passed Babalala and Boyela. Nothing to see and we moved on. We were just talking about the great sightings we had on this part and just a few minutes after we were discussing where we have seen the Eland a few years ago I saw something at the LH side.

This:

We looked at each other and started to laugh. How is this possible ?
First we thought to see a small group but…. No… a lot of them

-

-

And

-
Image
-

We were sure it was the same big group of Eland as we saw a few years ago.
We moved a bit to get a better view. I must say they were not close to the road but at about 100 to 200 meters away.

-

-

We tried to count them. Not easy but there were at least 40 of them. Bulls, lots of females and a nice number of younger ones.
Here you can see one of the big bulls

It was not that easy to make great pics because of the distance and the dense bush so to get an impression of the group here two final pictures of them before they moved further away.

Another day in my favorite area: Mopani

It was late afternoon and after an adventures drive in very very heavy rain, where I have seen the Tihongonyeni area turned into a lake and where I was driving through a little river instead of the Capricorn Loop I was really happy to get back on the main road. I was still a bit shaking and happy I did not get stuck in the mud. Just before the house of the Mooiplaas Ranger I saw these Eland not far from the road. So …a happy last part of this adventure.

-

-

I saw them just coming out of the bush

-

Small group (4) but so lovely to see them.

-
Image
-

The weather was not friendly , it started to rain again

And

-

-

After a few minutes the water came down not in drops but in liters….
I guess you can see the rain on this this picture

-

-

I had to close the window and went back to Mopani….

Later on more about the Eland
See you next story
