Margate

A 180° view from our holiday flat in Margate.

When the weather is bad, it’s very, very bad!

Here comes a big one!

Mpenjati

I have to say I was rather disappointed by Mpenjati. There was no-one at the gate – on all our previous visits there was always a Park official ready to greet us. We saw no-one the whole time we were there and the gate looked broken, so it probably doesn’t get closed at night. The ablutions were rather run down as were the braais and picnic tables. There used to be info boards up showing the fish and birds to be found in the area....those were gone. I did not do the trail as I was quite nervous to do it on my own. And there were no birds to be found except for a pair of Egyptian geese. This didn’t stop me from exploring my surroundings though.

Ramsgate Beach

This is our favourite spot - it has great rocks for SO to fish from, lots of rock pools to play in and explore, and a great swimming beach which is a lot quieter than Margate Beach. It's also the spot where SO proposed to me! :D

Big Crabs

The rock pools at Ramsgate are full of life - fishies, starfish, crabs, urchins, eels, sea-snails - and we had lots of fun with a piece of line, a tiny hook and some bait. A huge eel came and took my bait, but thank goodness it spat out the hook…those things give me the heebie jeebies!!

The Brats first catch….everything we caught went back into the water.

Still at Ramsgate…

I think this is a Kelp (Southern Blackbacked) Gull. I was surprised at how few birds there were…

And a juvenile (I’m hoping Dewi will correct me if I’m wrong.) :D

Image

The best match I could come up with is a Ruddy Turnstone.

Image

Not a great pic….a Swift (Greater Crested) Tern?

Image

Do gulls drink seawater...it certainly looked like this one was?

Nice one Fluts, all id's spot on. \O

Kelp Gulls in SA have dark eyes compared to the ones further South. Some seperate them as Cape Gulls, but I think thaat the official stance at the moment is they are all Kelp Gulls.

Nicely caught with the Swift Tern pic. \O

Wonder if there was something in that rock pool to interest the gull?
