They both utilize a method of hunting known as "still-hunting" which is better suited to their large size and body mass. Rather than expend large amounts of energy/calories in active pursuit of prey, they utilize patience, and lie in wait for their intended targets to approach, then ambush it.
The polar bear uses its excellent sense of smell to locate a seal breathing hole, and crouches nearby in silence for a seal to appear. The bear may lay in wait for several hours. When the seal exhales, the bear smells its breath, reaches into the hole with a forepaw, and drags it out onto the ice.

Male lions use a strategy wherein they locate a game trail and position themselves in an ideal spot for ambushing unsuspecting prey. Their large manes make them more conspicuous, so they may also patiently hide in denser vegetation, which also increases the number and variety of prey, as both small and large animals will not spot them as they would in open areas.

Weight for weight, both Polar Bears and male Lions expend more than double the energy to move at a particular speed compared to other mammals.
