The South African National Parks (SANParks) wildlife capture team recently delivered 13 ostriches, 14 eland and five giraffe to the !Khomani San’s Erin Game Ranch, south of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

The donation of animals by SANParks is provided for in the National Environmental Management Protected Areas Act and covered by the SANParks Policy on the Donation of Wildlife and Wildlife Products. SANParks’ donation of animals further contributes to the involvement of communities in the Wildlife Economy, thereby supporting government’s strategic objectives of socio-economic upliftment.

As part of the 2002 land settlement agreement reached between the ‡Khomani San and Mier communities, the government of South Africa and SANParks, it was agreed that SANParks would translocate wildlife to one of the ‡Khomani San properties to create a game ranch south of the !Ae!Hai Kalahari Heritage Park. Previously, 722 animals were translocated, including blue wildebeest, hartebeest, springbok and gemsbok.

Following the recent delivery of wildlife to the ranch, the Erin manager, Charl Page said: “We are very grateful to SANParks for helping us so much in this process. Rest assured that the wildlife will not only help us to become a world-class game farm but also help the !Khomani San community in their endeavour to reach their self-sustainable objectives.”

The game ranch has become an important source of income for the communities thanks to sustainable resource use. Wildlife Ranching South Africa has been instrumental in the success, as a result of extensive training of community members at the GhoenasKraal training facility, as well as their contributions of wildlife, equipment, and closing in the cold storage area.

Earlier this year, Erin Tented Camp was opened. The camp was constructed and furnished thanks to funding from Rotary Deutschland Gemeindienst and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, with Peace Parks Foundation as implementing partner. It consists of six safari tents with wooden decks, ablution blocks and a central kitchen.
