Try using Spot metering to expose the subject bird correctly and then in Post reduce the highlights caused by over exposure of the background

Example of Spot metering in backlit situations ..You get subject detail but the Background needed work in Post

Thanks for the advice, I will try next time. But I suppose that you have to shoot in RAW to reduce the overexposure ? I only shoot in Jpeg in order not to have too much work after my holidays :o0ps:
For my picture, I specifically wanted to have only the black silhouette of the birds, and not the detail of the plumage, so I am rather satisfied with the result. But I will follow your advice in other situations (for example a bird high in a tree against a clear sky).

I havent shot a Jpeg image in 10 years ..Its so worth it in the end
