If I forget to take one of my numerous shopping bags along, I always have one in the car.....like the umbrella
Here you can also buy strong paper ones

As a current/reluctant bachelor I always choose the plastic bags...
But my ousie puts them to very good use and none go into the garbage...

They do no harm in the garbage ! Of course depending of how they get rid of the garbage in SA. Here everything is burnt in very sophisticated ovens that turns it all into power

Our garbage all goes into landfills Lis, so it all sits in the ground!! I think some recycling may take place at the landfills but not sure.

Re: Local celebs pledge to give up plastic bags
Not a nice thought
The garbage has become a problem all over. When the famous ovens were built here, there was a lot of discussions because of the price and we even had a popular vote, but at the end they were built and they work well and with the power that is produced they have already paid for themselves a long time ago.
When we were in India I was shocked with what we saw. They just throw it wherever it is more convenient and of course it stinks in the heat and attracts all kinds of birds, rats etc. One of the reasons that I did not like the place

Re: Local celebs pledge to give up plastic bags
Over here some large supermarket chains have taken out plastic bags at the check out.
There are still those to put your vegs in. But since you have to wash that stuff anyways,
you might as well go without. Also, clothes retailers make you pay for a bag, not
matter what fortune you might have spent in their shop. I like it though.
And on my favourite island, you get a small discount in some shops when you tell them
you don't need any bag.

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Here you also pay for plastic bags, but only in the supermarkets...for some reason most of the chain stores & clothes stores now give them away for free again!!

Re: Local celebs pledge to give up plastic bags
It is a good purpose, but only in one mall unfortunately. I thought that some others would follow the good example and I am sure that some will do so.
