Re: Fires in KNP
Kindly be informed that Kruger National Park Rangers and Working on Fire teams will be burning grass inside Mopani Rest Camp on the Tuesday, 23 July 2019 and surrounding areas from 24 July to 01 August 2019.
Mopani Rest Camp is regarded as a high fire risk area due to the natural bush environment of the camp; therefore the prescribed burning of the dead old dry moribund material beneath the standing dry grass will reduce the fire risk to infrastructure as well as the fuel load to decrease the likelihood of serious fires.
While we note that the smoke created as a result of the burning which is the approved environmental acceptable method will be unpleasant to guests. The following precautions should be taken:
Inside the Camp
• Closing of windows to avoid any potential sensitivity to the smoke.
• Do not go near the flames
Outside the Camp
• Reduce travelling speed
• Switch on vehicle lights as visibility may be hampered
• Do not drive too close to the flames
• Do not get out of your vehicle
We apologize for any inconvenience caused as a result of the controlled fire burns.

Re: Fires in KNP
This is theoretically a very good idea, as the peculiar layout of Mopani Camp being built with a lot of bush in between makes it a fire hazard, IMO!
Not sure about the strict schedule, as it all depends on winds and temps..
The grass will grow back, but let's see?

Re: Fires in KNP
All that lovely natural habitat with all its birds , Lizards and snakes going up in smoke and destroying nature that has for decades sought refuge in the camp because of less predation and natural fire . ...Mid winter = hibernation and these fires will bring out all the Spitter Cobras and fast Mambas which will out of necessity seek refuse IN and around the Huts ..so I hope the fire teams are carrying Snake venom antidotes ..Roger I will DEMAND to have my booking changed to Shimuwini without any financial implications for you and any folk who have a booking for the next 4 months to make alternative arrangements as the special natural bush of the camp will be gone ..resembling Delville Wood after the battle and that lingering burnt smell

Re: Fires in KNP
I don't know that it is natural, Peter, as the grass would have burned naturally over the last 30 years?

Are you surprised? Maybe they only start next week like the fence at the Hluhluwe-Mfolozi Park
