Re: Tales of the Kgalagadi.
Our last few trips to the Kgalagadi have produced very few Lilac-breasted Rollers..I remember times gone by where they were perched on very second tree. I believe the fires of the past few years have something to do with the lack of smaller birds in general. I had a lovely sighting in February this year ..which hopefully will lead to more sightings of LBR's.
On the 19th Feb 2024 we were heading back to Mata Mata after a morning drive when I suddenly yelled STOP !!!
Doug stopped as quickly as he could in Monty and I grabbed my camera and started firing away. I was besides myself with excitement and ignored the grumblings in the background...grumblings to the tune of "You yelled STOP for a Lilac-breasted Roller ????" As I was replying that this was the first LBR that we has seen in our 19 days in the park....another arrived on the scene. That of course made me even more excited ...and what unfolded next made me even more than "more excited" I will let my photos tell the story.....:)
What had distracted the bird ??
Oh hello ...:) a second LBR. :)

She looked a bit stunned ...
but swallowed her hard-earned breakfast
and looked like nothing had happened at all...
This all took precisely 41 secs.....
Hopefully on our next visit we should see a few more LBR's ....
