The Roble was a natural freak northeast of Satara.

There was an endangered antelope enclosure at Nwaswitshumbe near Klopperfontein for many years, to breed roan and sable, but it didn't work out, precisely because disease/inbreeding/poor health struck, (Not anthrax, as the roan used to be innoculated) and the project was abandoned and survivors released...this was 30 years ago!

i was under the impression that the fencing on opposite side of the sabie river is not an enclosure but a browsing experiment,

where they have installed fences that are open at the bottom and only start at a certain height to prevent browsers of a certain height from entering the "enclosure"

all this,, so as to monitor the effects of the presence/absence of certain browsers on the vegetation.....

I've seen those ones...on the Salitje road.

This is sad news. Anyone knows the number of roan left. I saw an estimated figure of 90 last year. That means only 60 left if not less, because most of the Roan occur in the Mpani area and further north between Shingwedzi and Pafuri.

I think this is the one that starts about 2km before Nkuhlu but on the S30 side just after the prospector’s graves and is a duel strand affair, so agreed not an enclosure as such.

What’s confusing for me is that it’s obviously a long term and important experiment as in July I drove past that area about 10 times and everyday there was a large team doing repairs.

I saw enclosure to (near Timbavati/Girivana)... but think it was for plants experimentation or something like that, there was watering

what sad news for rare Antelopes

Johannesburg - An outbreak of anthrax that killed 30 roan antelope in the Kruger National Park has been contained, park spokesperson William Mabasa said on Wednesday.

"There have been no changes to the situation in the park," he said.

"Our people are on the ground to contain the situation and it hasn't spread to any other areas."

Mabasa said that it would be impossible to vaccinate all the animals in the park.

"We are only vaccinating the roan antelopes because they are a rare species and we must protect them."

On Tuesday, Mabasa said the carcasses were found at the weekend in an enclosure created for breeding.

"We are burning the carcasses and also vaccinating the other animals," he said.

The park had about 100 roan antelope before the outbreak.
