Media Release: Creating Vulture Safe Zones in the Karoo
01. August 2019
A new partnership between South African National Parks, the Mountain Zebra Camdeboo Protected Environment (MZCPE), Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), the SANParks Honorary Rangers and Birdlife SA will see the creation of a project to create vulture safe zones to hopefully attract vultures back into the Central Karoo. This comes at the perfect time as we head towards International Vulture Awareness Day on Sunday, 1 September 2019.
For those who are interested in finding out how to support this initiative, Dr Gareth Tate from the EWT’s Birds of Prey Programme will headline a special presentation on Vulture Safe Zones in Graaff-Reinet on Wednesday 14 August. The venue is the Boardroom at the Botanics Sports Field at 10 AM. The programme will also include guest speaker, Cobus Theron from the EWT Drylands Conservation Programme. He will present on the Karoo as the new conservation frontier, including their sustainable land management initiative, riverine rabbits and Karoo dwarf tortoises.
The presentations may be of interest to birding clubs, MZCPE landowners, local environmentalists or anyone who wants to find out more. Anyone interested in attending may RSVP to Maryke Stern on 083 3363 066 or via email to Maryke.stern@sanparks.org.
