Fantastic lion sighting.

A jackal had pushed up one of the tent door zips and gained access to our tent.


The place was a mess, but as far as we could see nothing had been damaged or stolen by the little S**t, so we set about tidying up before getting something to eat.

We were going to have bacon and eggs, but what......... No eggs
We found the raided egg box the next day

We spent the rest of the afternoon in camp, napping, showering and just relaxing, and keeping an eye on our amorous neighbours, who had now moved up under the A frame of no 5, in search of shade

Our afternoon drive, after cable tying the back zips to our tent involved a trip down to Leeudril, to see some flat lions

We also spotted this secretary bird

and a spotted eagle owl.

Then up to Kij Kij.
The lions had disappeared, but these wildebeest drinking at the waterhole more than made up for some absent or flat felines.

Oups, no more eggs for breakfast! Little scoundrels Maybe after all monkeys are worse than jackals, they would have strapped eveything and spread it all over Rooiput

While we were in Rooiputs, one of the things we did each morning, was to leave our camp site about 15 minutes before the official “gate opening time” and drive down to the waterhole until the designated time so as to

a) Have some quiet time and
b) See if there was anything at the waterhole, before driving off
Invariably, time out won, but today we had an eland that came to drink and then set off on its way

Our drive up north to Kij Kij was uneventful, but when we arrived at the waterhole we spotted some lions up on the dunes

The 3 “pygmy pride” lions had taken down an eland, and whilst two of the pride was relaxing on the dunes, the third male was enjoying some breakfast



Accompanied by about 40 black backed jackals
(From now on known as pretty little s**ts) (this jackal tale is still to be completed in future posts)

Our plan for the day was to do the lower triangle and have a breakfast (without any eggs) at Auchterlonie and the to go back to Rooiputs via Twee Rivieren, so that I could make some payments for work, so after a while watching a few flat and far away lions we set off over the Lower Dune Road towards the Auob


The road was horrendous, and we were really happy to arrive at Tierkop, where we could have a break from the corrugations AND to watch this pride of 7 lions right next to the road
