We took a drive into the park on Sunday. Knowing that an elephant had died in a fight at Lismore waterhole we went straight there to see if there were any scavengers around. There were plenty of jackal around ^Q^

Image

We stuck around a while but then decided to try Ngulube loop in case the lions were patrolling there again. There wasn't much to see but as we turned north again we found a big buffalo bull complete with oxpecker at Peasland O:V

Back at the elephant carcass some hyena had moved in O\/ O\/

In Wayne's Valley there was a new species of humpbacked kudu lol

Image

Marion Baree had some elephants with a very little one

Image

At Hapoor there was a very ill-looking buffalo with a tiny calf. I'm not sure how long they will survive all on their own 0:

Image

Herds of elephant were starting to move in at Hapoor, with the typical run as they approached the water

We had a nice lunch braai at Jacks and even found a boomslang hiding in the roof of one of the picnic sites

Image

The north of the park was very quiet but we enjoyed some more elephant action at Hapoor O:V

Back at the carcass at Lismore a different hyena had arrived... it was missing its tail

Some jackal had a bit of a disagreement lol

We took Vukani loop on the way out and found a nice size leopard tortoise as well as some eland close to the road O/\ O/\

I thought that there would have been vultures when you returned to the elephant carcass the third time O**

The lone buffalo with a calf looks really miserable

The Kudu looks completely wrong, kind of kangaroo look :-? lol

The mini elephant is soooo cute [InLuv]

Elephants at Hapoor is always a great show O/\ O/\

How far away from Addo do you live?

Bloody marvelous trip, Peej! O/\

Interesting the steam rising off the ellie carcass, maybe the stomach contents still fermenting? -O-

And the humpback kudu is brilliant!! =O:

Looks quite dry suddenly!

:ty: :ty: As always.

Addo never normally gets any vultures as the cape vulture colonies are so far away and there isn't really much terrain that would suit their nests nearby. However the day before we went there was a cape vulture at the carcass... only the second time I've heard of one being seen in the park ^Q^

Definitely some decomposition still going on with the carcass to give it the morning steam. The stench was something else [CV19]
Very dry in the north of the park... animals not looking so healthy there, but the south is very green in comparison \O
