Although it was a sunshine day, it became even brighter after meeting Mpostumus.
How wonderful to meet mites in a place where we share the same love. \O

We had a great drive and I will post some pics (mostly practising some skills).... but first this awesome experience :

Casually we were driving at a pace of 20km when we saw a pair of eland in the distance and one of them was running around in circles in the veld.

Image

Very slowly we drove nearer as not to disturb them.

Suddenly the 'crazy' one stopped..... looked us in the eye...

Image

and slowly started walking towards us..... eeeeeek !

Image

Then with a gush of energy he started running circles again.... around the car.

Image

Me : Here, here, take the pictures......

Image

Me : Give back, give back......

Image

Image

Image

Me : here, here, quickly quickly, take some more.

This buck went round and round. I was becoming concerned that it would hurt itself,

After about six circles I decided to drive off and let him calm down.

I stopped further up and looked back...... and he was still at it. What strange behaviour, yet it added so much excitement.

As you can see on the pics, it gave us full view of the strength of this animal and his muscles and also how solid he was on his little hooves.

This was amazing..... awesome.

Nice series of photos Amoli, love the frisky Eland sequence \O

I think your first bird for ID is a Long-tailed Widowbird - either a juvenile or a female. Not really enough to go on to be certain, but I've seen them there everytime I've been, so that's my best guess.

Agree with your Anteating Chat ID. \O

Thanx for sharing Amoli \O You certainly got the hang of the new camera!

Indeed strange behavior by the Eland... Are my eyes betraying me or is something the matter with his eye...

My best sighting for the day, and proudly flying her Green Ribbon -O

Great pics, Amoli. I like Ms Ostrich SA best. Lovely with the purple flowers in the front, green all around.

I am trying to find a source re Eland rut behaviour. Will let you know if I find something.

I remember seeing something about Springbok in KTP with reefs on their heads, but can't remember where.

Here's info on it - page 129.

Ok, got it... I think. November is rut season for Eland. Apparently their increase of male hormones make them a wee bit aggressive towards intruders. Will try to find more...

Amoli, definitely rut time. But no explanation for the tear marks.

A dark nose indicates increased libido... Now the question is, is it darker due to tear marks?
