Cape Town airport the best in Africa

Cape Town - The World Travel Awards Africa have recognised Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) as the best airport in Africa.
The airport won the award at a gala ceremony in Rwanda earlier this week.
Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde congratulated CTIA on the award, which is voted for by the tourism industry and consumers.
“I would like to commend Deon Cloete and his team at CTIA for flying South Africa’s flag high at these awards, once again being named as the continent’s best airport.”
Winde said they had added 10 new direct routes and secured 11 expansions since the launch of the joint Project Khulisa growth strategy.
“We’ve seen an increase of 27% in international air arrivals in the past year. Improving air access has played a major role in driving this increase,” Winde said.
In a statement, CTIA general manager Cloete said: “Cape Town International Airport is delighted to have received this accolade as it recognises the commitment to excellence shown by the whole of Airports Company South Africa and this particular airport in the last 12 months.
“All indications are that we can expect a bumper peak season in Cape Town. The team is geared to do their bit to welcome all our visitors.”
Cloete said October marked the start of the peak season when seasonal carriers launched their summer schedules. CTIA has already welcomed Edelweiss, which connects Cape Town to Zurich; Condor, which connects the city to Frankfurt; and soon Lufthansa will start operating its Munich to Cape Town run.
The airport also won best airport in Africa and the staff were named Best Airport Staff in Africa at the SkyTrax World Airport Awards, hosted in Germany last year.
CTIA is the second-busiest airport in South Africa.

No more irregular shaped bags accepted at OR Tambo

New rules for checking in bags of irregular shape and size will be applied at OR Tambo International Airport from today (March 25).
The new rules are aimed at preventing blockages and breakdowns in the baggage handling system caused by bags that do not have any flat surfaces or that have long straps or grips as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines.
Bags that are round or do not have a flat surface of any kind are the largest source of jams in the baggage handling system. These jams can shut down sections of the baggage handling system, delay baggage delivery to aircraft and inconvenience passengers and airlines.
Airport management has been contemplating these new rules since early 2018 and has now decided to adopt baggage conditions similar to those applied at other international airports.
Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport recently instituted the same kind of baggage rules that will now be applied at OR Tambo International Airport.The new rules have been agreed to after extensive consultations with the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) and other bodies representing airlines.
The new baggage rules are:
1. Only regular-shaped bags will be allowed at check-in counters;
2. This means that the bags must have at least one flat surface to be accepted on the check-in system;
3. Round or irregular-shaped bags will not be allowed at check-in counters; and
4. Bags with longs straps will not be allowed at check-in counters.
Passengers trying to check in bags that do not conform to these rules will be offered the option of having their baggage wrapped with one flat side at airport approved baggage wrapping stations.
“We very much appreciate that these new baggage rules will potentially create inconvenience or additional cost for some passengers, so this is not a step we have taken lightly,” says Kris Reddy, assistant general manager: operations services.

Nothing strange about that. With everything automated, you cannot have someone running from one place to another to free a piece of luggage holding up the rest. They must write it together with the luggage rules though
