Some classic sightings and pics, Pumbaa...once again the wetness makes a totally new set of circumstances! [O]

Absolutely stunning images, Pumbaa!! \O

Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

When we were sure that the black shouldered kite will stay on that branch we drove a bit backwards as from that spot notother branch was in the way

Image

and needless to say that Timon was in his element again and a lot of pictures were produced whilst the raptor appeased its appetite

Image

Image

and unfortunately the mouse got less and was ripped into pieces very quickly.

Image

Soon the rest of the mouse followed and in fact the black shouldered kite did not held up long with its breakfast

Image

Image

and soon same was finished and the raptor flew away.

Image

Somehow not far from this sighting we discovered another black shouldered kite in flight who also for searching for its breakfast.

Image

Image

We felt as if we were the only people on that road as we did not meet anybody else but must say that the road meanwhile turned into a slippery and muddy slide so supposed that many people avoided to drive same. Besides any other cars the sightings also were not that plentiful and only on the S107 we stopped for a couple of dead bushes which were taken by a large number of barn swallows

Image

and on a normally not existing stream on a smaller causeway on the S28 which now was filled with water we discovered to our delight another colourful malachite kingfisher

Image

which was a delight for the eyes with that colour explosion on such a grey morning as you can see on that shot of a giraffe who just crossed the road

Image

and who soon started to feed on the bushes on the other side of the road.

At Duke’s we met another birdie who was a bit shy

Image

and again met there the pin tailed whydah we noticed there already yesterday

Image

and same even presented his approach for landing.

Image

Unfortunately meanwhile the rain set in again and also on a smaller causeway we had to cross on the S137 the water was flowing strongly and consequently we did not see anything until we again stood on the Lower Sabie causeway where we discovered an African jacana

Image

and we had known better after a short body break at Lower Sabie that the S21 which we originally wanted to drive was closed so without seeing anything we returned to Lower Sabie and I even asked at the reception there whether Biyamiti camp was still reachable. The friendly receptionist even called there and got the confirmation that the camp was still reachable and presently there were no road closures in that area so in order to be on the safe side we decided to drive straight into that direction and could drive along the S139 instead so on the shortest way which was along the H5/S108 we neared Biyamiti and met along our drive an African fish eagle resting on a branch in the rain.

[Image

The Bume causeway we had to cross next was already an adventure but luckily same was still passable - here a view after we crossed same safely.

Image

Along our way we luckily met a kudu male who was extreme hungry

Image

and meanwhile we already turned into the S139 where we met an already very drenched and unhappy looking bateleur couple.

Image

I must say that we pictured the drive on that road much more worse because of the hilly and winding road but besides a lot of puddles no adventurous crossing of any causeway had to be done so we could relax a bit more and stopped for a woodland kingfisher in the rain

Image

and another not that happy looking bateleur.

Image

At one of the many causeways we had to cross a hamerkop was in hunting mode

Image

and we also noticed a lot of white backed vultures but also this road was also very quiet.

Image

to be continued……
