I "found" one once during a guided walking safari in Zimbabwe. I am sure the guides knew it was there and left it there to show to the tourist. It was not a nice piece (brownish and the tip was missing), but big and very heavy, impossible to carry on kilometers back to the car.

I found a small piece while walking the Olifants Trail as a schoolkid. I was happy and showed the ranger, intending to keep it as a souvenir!
He threw it into the veld and said what you find in the bush stays in the bush!

Found a porcupine quill on our last trip and was tempted to take it.
But better judgement made me leave it behind.
