I was truly disgusted today.
I came across the leopard sighting on the Gomondwane loop, S130. About 5 cars and one OSV. A young female leopard in a tree with mum resting in the bush keeping a weather eye. Everyone behaving perfectly, quiet, engines off.
Then they came....dozens and dozens of them. As soon as word got out on the guides radios, and on social media...YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE LASTES SIGHTINGSthe whole sighting turned into a zoo.
How do I l know most of the self drive people had heard about the sighting on LS ? I asked them.....
Within 25 minutes there was shouting, jostling, dust and chaos.
The young leopard left the tree and sat with mum for a while and after ten minutes when everything got really crazy they turned tail and left. You could see the fear in her eyes.
The OSV regulars from Croc Bridge that I know behaved impeccably. I wish I could say the same for some of the others.
As I left , after managing to extracate myself, I was passed by car after car and OSV’s driving up from the crocodile bridge end, way over the speed limit with no regard for any of the other animals in the park.
It’s a narrow road as we know but the behaviour at the sighting and from those speeding to the sighting was unforgivable.
I was reminded of Sean de la Harper’s post about the leopard cub that was killed because of pressure from visitors.
Someone has to put a stop to this before we lose more of our beautiful leopard.
