I mind the mystax fascinating, I think it serves as a face mask for protection from fighting prey.

We had a mousebird inside the other morning, which the cat brought in but I managed to save it.
Then a rat, which I couldn't save.

He has a bell on his collar so he doesn't often catch birds and he very rarely kills them.
