In response to the current lockdown, the EWT is excited to bring you a new series of webinars, aimed at offering entertainment and education during these difficult times, and allowing you to discover the outdoors, indoors. Each week, our EWT experts will take you behind the scenes of their work, giving you a sneak peak into the exciting, wild world of conservation. We're inviting you to take a break, join us for a chat, and be amazed by the wonders of our natural world. Each chat will be approximately 20 minutes long, with time afterwards for questions and answers, and many of them will be appropriate for the junior conservationists among us too!

We'll share a Zoom link for each Wild Chat the day before, so make sure you keep an eye on your email or our social platforms, and be sure to join early, as space is limited to 100 participants per chat.

So stay home, stay safe, and stay connected with our wild world.

Join Constant for a fascinating Wild Chat on 21 April 2020, at 11:00 (GMT+2)

Constant Hoogstad, EWT Senior Manager: Industry Partnerships, has more than 20 years' experience in conservation. Join him for this incredible Wild Chat and discover some of the most extreme experiences nature has to offer.

He will share some of the weird and wonderful interactions he has witnessed between different wildlife species, and between humans and wildlife, as well as the challenges that conserving Endangered species can bring. He'll be chatting about some of his most unexpected experiences in the field, including the day a rhino destroyed his vehicle, how not to catch a hippo, what happens when a leopard takes on a python, why you should always check your bed for snakes, and so much more!

Join Wendy Collinson, Manager of the EWT’s Wildlife and Transport Programme, for this exciting Wild Chat that will expose how camera traps can save animals’ lives! Wendy will chat about the storm drains or underpasses we find under our roads, and how, although these structures were mostly not built or erected for the express purpose of being wildlife passages, we believe that many animals do use them to cross the road safely. To test this, in a first for South Africa, we placed camera traps inside some of the tunnels on the N3 highway to see which animals are using them. Make sure to join this Wild Chat to find out what Wendy and her team have discovered and how these camera trap snaps can make our roads safer!
This talk is suitable for all ages.

Join Cole for a fascinating Wild Chat on 23 April 2020, at 11:00 (GMT+2)

African Wild Dogs are highly social creatures. Their survival depends on it. They are also not big animals. They only weigh 30kg (much like a German Shepherd) and can only run 70km/h. When compared to a Lion or a Cheetah, they don’t have the advantage of strength or speed in the wild, but they do have each other and this is what makes them incredibly successful. They hunt together, play together and look after one another. In cases where an African Wild Dog is sick or injured, the pack will nurture it to health and even bring food to him/her if needed. In the world of African Wild Dogs, the pack always comes first and this is one attribute that makes this carnivore unique.

In this Wild Chat, Cole du Plessis, the Coordinator of the Wild Dog Range Expansion Project, will share his stories about a very special three-legged African Wild Dog, called Lihle. Cole spent three years monitoring Lihle and her pack in Zululand and got to learn just how tough, intelligent and special these creatures are.

This talk is suitable for all ages.

Join Gareth for a fascinating Wild Chat on 28 April 2020, at 11:00 (GMT+2)

In 2018, the EWT Birds of Prey Programme launched a project to investigate a poorly understood population of Martial Eagles that live and breed on electrical infrastructure across the semi-arid Karoo landscape of South Africa.

Join Dr Gareth Tate for this insightful Wild Chat, as he discusses some of the exciting findings we have uncovered about this unique population of eagles over the past two years. He will talk about the new technology we have been using to gain a deeper insight into this charismatic African eagle; from satellite tracking, aerial surveys and camera work, and will also touch on how we are translating our research, and the use of novel technology, into conservation action to protect this globally threatened eagle.

This talk is suitable for teens and adults.
