Beware the spots in March ...

Post by RogerFraser »

So after waiting for three months for a client to allow me to return to site in Gauteng to complete an installation finally they approved the cost of the trip .I also needed to meet with the Client in Mkhuhlu to get a contract signed so a plan was formulated .SO was willing to wait around in Gauteng while I was working at the site for a few days then we would go to the Client in Mkhuhlu for the meeting and onto Kruger for three nights . O/\ O\/ .

The trip went as planned and just after mid day on the 26h March we entered at Phabeni gate on our way for the overnight stay at Pretoriuskop .On the way to check in at camp in the heat of the day we found :

First I thought so, but isn't the shell of the terrapin more smooth? -O-

It was just fortunate that I have a client at Mkhuhlu that I needed to meet with which is 5km from Phbeni gate else it would be a bit out the way

 it was a Terapin a very small one in the middle of the S65 dirt road with the only water about 2km down the road where we saw the Hippo .We think possibly it had been taken by a bird or predator and dropped ,now it was trying to find its way back to water . -O-

Might be seasonal but we found allot of the Zebra groups in these huddles during the trip . Where they rest on each others backs .

After unpacking ,refueling and stocking up at the shop at Pretorius we went out for a quick drive before gate closing heading off to Shithave Dam as we had alot of luck there last trip .

Our first predator was trying to make a quick getaway across the road with its spotty camouflaged skin =O:

We duly stopped and waited unit it had reached a safe position and then carried on to the dam.

Arriving at the dam we found it very full from the recent rains .Taking over half the car viewing area which I guess had expanded due to the lower water levels .
A stork was busy directing traffic or maybe just drying out its wings lol It was quite fun to watch .

The only other mammals at the dam we saw were these very careful waterbuck

The sun was getting low and time was ticking to gate closing so we took a few landscape shots where you can see the level and left for camp.
Image

The only other sighting we saw on the way back was a Waxbill cleaning up some bug splatter on the road .

My post has disappeared

A "quick getaway" related to a chameleon does not quite fit =O: =O:

Nice pics of the black storks \O

The waxbill is a European Roller, as RP has stated above ;-)
