On Sunday 14th November we were on the S114, just south of the bridge, at a wild dog siting. (See pics)
The dogs were 10m off the road, under a tree and very relaxed.
An SANDF official arrived in his vehicle from the north. The driver stepped out of his vehicle and walked towards the dogs from 30m away. He was stopped by another motorist and climbed back in his car.
He then drove towards the dogs, off the road into the veld, whilst opening and closing his doors and shouting at the dogs to scare them away. The dogs became distressed and stood up, he continued this behaviour until they ran off into the bush.
We confronted the driver and questioned what he was doing. His response was that he was “just looking at what was going on”.
We asked why he chased the dogs away and asked for his identification, as his behaviour was so unbelievable. He became aggressive towards us and the passenger brandished his rifle, either to prove he was an SANDF official or to intimidate us. Both the driver and passenger were not in any type of uniform.
This experience was awful, why the SANDF is harassing endangered species and trying to intimidate the public I don’t know? If he was worried about having tourists in the area they were in, as maybe they were tracking poachers, he should have said.
We did report the incident at Malelane Gate as we exited the park, and to the roads manager. Didn’t have a chance to go to the camp as we were trying to outrun the storm.
