Two men accused of killing German tourist remanded in custody

Third man was arrested for a different case

Two of the three men police said were arrested in connection with the murder of a German tourist in Mpumalanga have been remanded in custody by the KaBokweni magistrate's court.

Police initially said three men were arrested, but on Monday, spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala said the third man was arrested in connection with another case and was not involved in Jorg Schnarr's murder.

Cebo Marshall Mamba, 38, and Bongimusa Fortune Lebo Matsane, 25, were arrested on separate days and in different places last week.

The two told the court that they require legal aid services.

They are accused of shooting Schnarr, 67, twice while he and his wife and another German couple were travelling along Numbi Road, which leads to the Kruger National Park, on October 3.

“The two accused appeared in the KaBokweni magistrate's court and their case was postponed to November 28 for the accused to give instructions to the state lawyer.

“Only two could appear in court as the third suspect was not linked to this crime but other robberies in Piet Retief; so he's going to appear there for his crimes,” said Mohlala.

He said one of the men was cornered at a certain retail store in Mbombela while the other was found driving a Toyota Tazz believed to have been used after the attack on the tourists.

The accused apprehended while driving the Tazz was found in possession of a firearm with its serial numbers filled off as well as about 11 live ammunition and some jamming devices.

The first suspect to be arrested in the matter, Napoleon Joseph Nyalunga, was denied bail by the Kabokweni magistrate's court recently.

Shonisani Tshikalange Reporter

A 72-hour activation plan has been launched to trace the suspects who shot two security guards and robbed them of their firearms before fleeing by foot on Numbi Gate Road in Salubindza, outside White River in Mpumalanga.

The incident happened on Thursday at about 4.15pm.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lt-Gen Semakaleng Daphney Manamela condemned the incident.

Police spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala said a team of experts from the provincial detectives are investigating the incident.

“According to the report, two Hitech security officers were inside their patrol van when two armed suspects emerged on foot and fired several shots at the guards, who sustained serious injuries,” said Mohlala.

“The suspects robbed the victims of their firearms before they fled on foot. An ambulance took the security officers to hospital.”

A case of armed robbery with two additional counts of attempted murder was opened.

No arrests have been made yet.

“Police urge anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators to call the Crime Stop number 08600-10111 or send information via MySAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”

I suppose that you mean that criminals should fear the police, not normal law-abiding citizens? ;-)

Three men charged with murder of German tourist remain in custody

Three men charged with the murder of a German tourist on the Numbi Gate road in October last year appeared briefly before the Kabokweni magistrate’s court today to apply for bail.

However, the application by Napoleon Joseph Nyalunga (35), Marshall Cebo Mamba (38), and Bongumusa Fortune Matsane (25) did not proceed as their legal representative was not present in court. They will remain in custody until their next court appearance on 16 February.

The three appeared in connection with the murder of the 67-year-old Joerg Schnarr, a German tourist, who was shot and killed when he and three passengers were driving in a Hyundai minibus towards the Kruger National Park. The shooters were reportedly driving a VW Caddy.

The suspects are said to have instructed the tourists to open the doors of their vehicle, but the driver reportedly locked all the doors, and one of the suspects shot at him through the window, hitting him in the upper body. The victims’ vehicle drove in reverse for about 100 meters before crashing into the wall of Heroes Academy,” Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said at the time.

Schnarr died on the scene. The suspects reportedly sped off in their vehicle without taking anything from the tourists.

Numbi road’s upgraded security measures in place
The Numbi road has now become the preferred route for tour operators into the KNP and to other tourism attractions in the area.

Additional security measures have been put in place in the area to keep tourists safe following the killing of a German tourist a year ago.
SANParks has joined forces with Mdluli Safari Lodge, the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT), private security companies and the police to secure the area and combat crimes threatening the Kruger National Park (KNP) and the tourists visiting the area.

The KCLBT’s COO, Linda Grimbeek, said the Numbi road has now become the preferred route for tour operators into the KNP and other tourism sectors in the area. “We have upgraded all the security measures in place and we are planning to add even more safety measures on that road. We are not only going to focus on the Numbi road, but are going to ensure the safety of visitors on all tourist routes,” she said.

On the Numbi route, cameras have been installed to monitor the road and 24-hour private security patrols, coupled with police visibility, are enforced. Tourism safety monitors from the national Department of Tourism have also been deployed.
According to Grimbeek, all the illegal speed humps on the road have been removed, except for those that legally have to be there, such as where children cross the road. “Some of the potholes that were causing motorists to slow down have also been repaired and are being monitored on a daily basis. We have community members who are also on the watch for any criminal activities,” Grimbeek said.

She added that they are still going to add more cameras at strategic points to ensure the entire road is well monitored.

Meanwhile, the director of Mdluli Safari Lodge, Chris Schalkwyk, said tourism is very important to the country, with KNP being one of the most visited areas in the world. “The KNP is an iconic park that attracts internationals to South Africa and especially our province. That is why we need to enhance safety and security measures in the area. We can only keep the international guests coming if we can ensure their safety,” he said.

SANParks’ spokesperson, Ike Phaahla, said they welcome all the support they get from the private sector to keep the road leading to the KNP safe. “The safety of our guests is our priority, and with the measures in place at the moment, we are happy that tourists can now travel on the Numbi road without being attacked. We are going to work with them to ensure that the situation remains the same across other routes leading to the park,” he said.

A German tourist, Jörg Schnarr (67), was fatally shot early in October 2022 during an apparent failed hijacking near the Numbi Gate. Schnarr was shot through his vehicle’s window in the upper body after he had locked the doors to keep the assailants out.
