The Lions of the Kgalagadi (or not!) KTP May/June 2022

Post by GavinW »

So who ever gets to go to the KTP for 2 weeks and has only one lion sighting?

Us =O:

Join us as we tell you about everything else which we saw O/\ O/\

Friday 27 May 2022

Excited to get on our way to our favourite place after a year of waiting and planning, we left Cape Town at 4.30am en route to the Kalahari Guest House, 50km north of Upington, where we were to sleep over

Red wine and chicken rolls were on the menu before we retired into our pop up 2-man tent for the night

Saturday 28 May 2022

We woke early, like 5 o clock early, and after coffee, and then took down the tent

(A mission, ask me, it was my job!) Those pop up tents are impossible to fold down.

We had a wonderful warm shower and set off for the park.

After a pit stop in Askam, we were checking in by 10am and did some last-minute admin before heading off to Rooiputs.

Our first sightings of the trip, on the way to Rooiputs were these ostriches

And then a stunning Spotted Eagle Owl

Very nice owl sighting Gavin… looking forward to hearing more about your trip. We also felt lion sightings were lower than anticipated but we did manage more than one ;-) O** O**

As long as you got to see the cheetahs and the leopards, you can do away with the lions.
I remember trip when there were lions at every corner and even in between but hardly any other animal
because the lions dominated everything. So I hope that seeing only one lion meant other good stuff for you.

Love the owl!

Thanks for jumping on board everyone, great to have you along for the ride. O/\ O/\

We got to Rooiputs by mid day and set up our tent in Campsite no 4, our home for the next 4 nights :-)

Our evening drive to Melkvlei and back was uneventful, but we were happy just to soak in the Kgalagadi sights and smells as we bumbled along.

We did see our first tawny eagle of the trip

And a pale chanting goshawk

The evening was warm and provided us with time to relax back in camp and enjoy the sunset and a lekker braai

Quite unusual to be able to wear sleeve-less at that time of the year? -O-
