Hello again.

This evening, my wife alerted me to a male Black Redstart chasing a female near the balcony adjacent to ours, which was the site of a successful nesting last year.

Sure enough, when I peeked around the wall separating the balconies, there was the female sitting on the edge of the uncovered ventilation duct that they had used. \O

It's curious that they have been here for some time already this spring, but are only beginning to nest now. I need to check when they fledged last year... O**

For my South African friends, the Black Redstart adapted to built-up areas after being mostly a mountain species (in rocky areas above tree-line, where they can still be found). In some neigborhoods in Prague, including our own, we have the curious situation of both the Black Redstart and Common Redstart (a bird of forest edges and well-wooded gardens) nesting in close proximity to each other.

Here is the male from this evening.

Here is the female in the aforementioned duct.

And here is the female in the nearby spruce.
