Great installment STF, the house in Courmayeur is stunning, reminds me of the houses in Saltzburg \O
By some of those photo's it looks so cold outside yet you all in short sleeve shirts

Not for nothing has the "Bernina Express" become a Unesco World Heritage site with its 55 tunnels and 156 viaducts and bridges and it was built in 1908/10 \O

Agreed nan. Always nicer to something from another persons perspective.

Thanks very much JN. We just loved those houses in Switzerland.
It was actually very hot except for at the top of Monte Bianco where it was freezing.

Thanks for the information Lisbeth. It is my wish to ride the Bernina Express again.

Thanks Flutterby. We hope that you will do this train trip one day. We prefer summer but some folk say that doing it in winter is simply stunning.

WEEK 3 - ITALY AND SWITZERLAND. Part 2 of 2.

St Moritz - Tirano - Milano - Rome.

4 August 2005.

We caught the early train from St Moritz to Tirano as we had two other trains to catch this day - Tirano to Milano and then Milano to Rome.

One of the many glacier streams the train crosses.
Image

Another lovely view from the train of a glacier with its waterfalls and lake.

On the spiral just before arrival at Tirano.

5 to 8 August - Rome.

A selection of photos taken over these 4 days in Rome.

A rather fascinating photo of a statue looking at a live bird.
Image

Cannot remember the name of this place.
Image

St Peters church. We took a lift three quarters of the way to the top where we could look down on mass being given. We then had to walk up 327 steps to get to the top of the dome.

Once at the top we had to then walk down the 327 steps to where the lift was.

The famous Fontana di Trevi.
Image

What would a visit to Rome be without going to see this place.
Image

Another famous building of which I cannot remember the name. All I do know is that it was built for the tomb of the first king of a unified Italy.

Rome is a city with hundreds of fountains - this is just one of those hundreds.

Hercules Temple in the background.
This is especially for RP.
From Wikipedia: Dating from the later 2nd century BC, and perhaps erected by L. Mummius Achaicus, conqueror of the Achaeans and destroyer of Corinth,[2] the temple is 14.8 m in diameter and consists of a circular cella within a concentric ring of twenty Corinthian columns 10.66 m tall, resting on a tuff foundation.

In week 4 - Wales - Lakes District - London.

It is too long ago that I have been to Rome *sigh*
Cannot remember the name of this place.
It is "Piazza del Campidoglio" Today it is the Municipality of Rome, but its past is much more interesting ;-) The Square was designed by Michelangelo during 1537-39 and is facing the Saint Pietro church. It is built on the smallest of the famous 7 hills of Rome, but maybe the most important one because the centre of the ancient Rome.
Rome is a city with hundreds of fountains - this is just one of those hundreds.
One of the three fountains of Piazza Navona, specificly the fountain of the four Rivers by Bernini, 1648/51, in front of the obelisk in the centre of the square.

You had beautiful weather, which is very important when you visit a town like Rome.....it is all outside ;-) Beautiful pics of /from Saint Pietro \O
