Police in the Western Cape have opened an inquest docket following the discovery of a woman’s body on Table Mountain, spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed on Saturday.

The discovery was made on Friday afternoon.

The unidentified woman, according to Rwexana, was in her mid-30s.

"A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death," said Rwexana.

According to IOL, the body is believed to be that of a 32-year-old Varsity College lecturer who was last seen leaving her Newlands home at 13:30 on Wednesday.

Western Cape Gangwatch posted on social media yesterday afternoon that her body had been found at the bottom of a steep cliff at Platteklip Gorge on Table Mountain, the publication reported.

According to EWN, "the deceased has not yet been identified, but it's believed to be a missing Newlands woman who was last seen alive on Wednesday".

Tourists should not fear coming to SA, says minister

Tourists should have no fear being in South Africa or visiting the country, despite the recent murder of a Ukrainian and reports of tourist robberies in the Western Cape.

This is according to Tourism Minister Mmamakolo Kubayi-Ngubane.

Kubayi-Ngubane would have been taking note of the recent death involving Ukranian tourist Ivan Ivanov who was stabbed to death last weekend.

"I would like to reassure tourists that it is safe to travel to South Africa and that their safety remains top priority for the South African government.

"Despite the few isolated incidents which paint South Africa negatively, our country remains a preferred destination for weddings, honeymooners, lifestyle, music and cultural events as well as the filming industry with most of these drawing significant number of travellers," said Kubayi-Ngubane.

Those believed to be involved in Ivanov's murder have had their day in court and will hear their bail application bid results before the end of August.

Earlier this year, a man was fatally stabbed while hiking with his wife near Boyes Drive in St James. News24 reported that the 56-year-old man was accosted just after 11:00 in Echo Valley.

Hout Bay, Chapmans Peak and Table Mountain have seen a litany of crime incidents over the past couple of months, however, Kubayi-Ngubane says police have the cases under control.

"In relation to the incidents that have happened recently, we are happy that police have taken action to ensure that the perpetrators are arrested within reasonable time."

"The department is currently finalising the safety strategy that will be launched in a few coming weeks as announced in the budget vote in June."

She called on the public to "isolate those who try to portray our country in a negative manner" and urged them to report any suspicion activity.

It is much better if the tourists have been warned, if they have to go to SA, because that might save them. Otherwise better stay away.

Why does the minister not admit to certain places and certain behaviour that should be definitely avoided by tourists? Next time a tourist is murdered or hijacked or abused, at least she can say that she warned them. SA might miss out on some income, but as the economy is performing these days, it will hardly be noticed

City to tackle Table Mountain attacks

Sunday 11 August 2019 - 8:52am

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town welcomed the launch of the National Tourism Safety Awareness Campaign this week.

The initiative follows the recent murder of a Ukranian hiker, along with other isolated incidents involving tourists on Table Mountain.

The campaign sees an increase in the number of so-called Tourism Monitors, and the addition of more cameras and possibly drones later this year.

Cape Town Safety and Security mayoral committee member JP Smith says it's not so simple to police one of Cape Town's most recognisable landmarks.

However, the City wants to work with provincial and national government on this.

"I think that as you can see that's a very difficult thing to do. You've got an infinite number of access points, and the people you're looking for easily blend with other hikers. It's very hard to profile the person unless they look slightly out of place,” Smith said.

Smith says visitor safety in the Park is the responsibility of the police and SANParks.

The City is exploring deploying trained law enforcement officers to the Park, and depending on resources, also to the Cape Flats.
