New Memorial Sites as Tourist Attractions

Post by Toko »

ZUURBERG PEACE MEMORIAL IN ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK
The proposed development is to be established by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and is intended to serve as a peace memorial that will ensure social cohesion among the Khoi, the San and AmaRharhabe. The memorial will commemorate a war which occurred during the 1800’s between the Dutch, the AmaRharhabe, The Khoi and the San and is intended to provide insight into the history of the war which occurred over the ownership of the land in the area. The proposed memorial is intended as a tourist attraction and it is hoped that it will attract increased numbers of visitors to the area, contributing to local economic development. The proposed development is intended to comprise of the following: i. A Peace Memorial, measuring 430 m2 in extent and comprising four tiers, each dedicated to each of the four groups which were involved in the disputes over land in the region, namely: the Dutch, Khoi, San and AmaRharhabe. The structure has been designed to have as low an environmental impact as possible and will be constructed from locally-sourced materials; ii. Additional supporting infrastructure, comprising ablutions, a kiosk and a small curio shop will also be established, together with a parking area and landscaped garden; and iii. The memorial will be accessed via a constructed walkway which winds its way through the natural bush, exposing visitors to the views and scenery which can be seen from the elevated position of the proposed development site. The site measures approximately 1.5 ha in extent and is currently undeveloped, although some portions of the site have been previously disturbed. An unlicensed borrow pit is located on the southern portion of the site. This borrow pit has previously been utilised by SANParks as a material source for the maintenance of roads in the National Park. A patch of kikuyu grass has been planted in the northern portion of the site, indicating some unknown previous land use. In order to minimise disturbance and removal of the natural vegetation, the developer proposes to establish much of the proposed development in these previously disturbed areas.
