Re: Flavour of the month May 2015 - Bitterpan

Post by Bushveld Jock »

We've been to Bitterpan in Dec 2008 when children under 12 years were still allowed to go. It was also the first time Moshi discovered a blister beetle when he got sprayed by formic acid from the beetle while we were having supper. The beetle was hiding in the sealing and for some reason dripped some acid onto Moshi.

Over the years the camp changed slightly from a communal braai only to individual braai at each cabin. Its best to book out the whole camp or at least 50 % so that you can get more privacy.

You can only reach Bitterpan in a 4x4 from Nossob. We did not get stucked, but I've read of a few people struggling to get over the dunes trying a few times. Even when we stayed there some-one had to winch himself out to make it to the top. Most of the road not difficult to drive and only one dune and corner that can be challenging.

The !Xerry camp is on the way to Bitterpan not too far from Nossob. We passed the camp when we did the Nossob Eco 4x4 route.

Booking the whole camp would be the only way for me to ever go to Bitterpan... We've always avoided that camp because everyone keeps telling you that you basically sit on top of your neighbours or vice versa and I don't see going to a remote place and being conquered by some chatty neighbours. 0*\ But booking out the whole camp is always quite expensive. :O^

Yet, from all the photos I've seen so far - including yours, BJ and Polentswa - I think it's a really nice camp and one of these days, when I'm grown up and have enough money ( lol ), I'd like to go as well.

Thanks for your photos! \O

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

Booking the whole camp is 8 people or 2 families of 4 ..Last time I was there it was my family staying in the 2 cabins one side of the communal room and another family unknown to us in the far other 2 cabins ...We are still big friends 4 years later ..You are far more cramped up at Lower Sabie campsite or Satara along the fence etc or Nossob these days
