Conflicting Interests over Fishing & Zoning in Langebaan

Post by Klipspringer »

There is an ongoing conflicts over fishing rights in the Langebaan lagoon.

Here some background on the zoning and the battle of local fishermen to have fishing rights:

http://masifundise.org/zone-b-still-zon ... n-fishers/

And here the news piece:

It looks like a triple trade off: Conservation of marine species vs local livelihood fishing vs tourist recreational fishing.

Obviously not a good situation when tourism interests compete with locals. One is tempted to call this a fortress conservation conflict and SANParks is in favour to keep out tourists this time lol

Hmmmm.... if the treknetters had kept to their permits over the past 50 years , then there would not be shortage of fish all along the coast-line . They are supposed to inspect their catch immediately before pulling the nets out of the water , and for instance , if it contains wrong species , or undersized fish , then they are supposed to open the purse and let the catch go , but I have never seen or heard of them doing that 0*\

There are a lot of "suppose" in your posts, Okie O**

I do not know much about this problem, so did not answer to Klipspringers post, but I have seen too many crayfish on sale in gray plastic bags in Paternoster 0*\ 0*\

SANParks released a brief 5 week public comment period regarding rezoning, (once again just before the festive season, as usual) so the same crap is happening there as in Kruger...verbatim going to "High Intensity" land usage and what not. Meanwhile the PDF itself says Dept Of Fisheries is not controlling fishery activity in the protected area.
