A Bit of Switzerland between Nan and Lis

Post by Puff Addy »

Hi all,

Almost equidistant to Nan and Lis (as the crow flies) is the town of Kandersteg in Switzerland's Berner Oberland, a place I visited on my first trip to Europe way back in 1992.

I was not a birder then and can only remember seeing Alpine Choughs above Kandersteg's #1 attraction, the Oeschinensee. Twenty-four years later and no longer young and stupid (but old and stupid), I traveled to Kandersteg with my wife for a two-week stay. We returned home yesterday.

Some pictures and a few words will follow. In the meantime, here is a map of Switzerland. Kandersteg is southeast of Bern and is above the second 'e' in Berner Alpen.

Yes, Alf and Rich, it was great and mountainous.

The highest mountains in the immediate area are just shy of 3700 metres. Kandersteg sits at around 1200 metres, so the view up to the peaks from the valley is quite impressive. There are also sheer cliffs with many waterfalls.

The house in the foreground is where we stayed. We had the whole top floor to ourselves.

The landlady, as luck would have it, was a birder and a botanist, so we got many tips on where to see certain species, and she also had a good reference library for us to peruse. \O

Oh dear how I wish that it did not rain all the time 0*\ The Alps are gorgeous and in this period, a sea of flowers and normally June is the perfect month....apart from this year O/

If of interest to anybody, Lausanne is Nan and Lugano is Lis ;-)

What a nice house ^Q^ ^Q^ and the wood is stacked perfectly lol
