What is your favourite National Park

Post by Dindingwe »

I have just received this email from SANParks :

Dear SANParks Customer,

Which is your favourite South African National Park to visit? Just how attached are you to this Park?
A PhD student from the University of South Africa is assisting SANParks with measuring place attachment of visitors to all of the national parks. Please help us out by answering a few questions. This will only take a few minutes of your time.

Difficult to say, because they are so many different, each with a particuliar feature.

I answered Mapungubwe. Why ? It is remote, there are few visitors, the accomodation are very confortable (especially Leokwe Camp), there are great landscapes, a very good bird hide with good light exposure. The tree-top walk is a nice attraction where I saw some rare species, and the park is also a historical site. On the other hand, there is not so much game, but I think it will improve as it is a new park.

I like many of them. Kruger is my favourite for the diversity of the fauna, and Kgalagadi for its special atmosphere. But I loved Mapungubwe when I discovered it and I choose this one because I know not many people would mention it.

Difficult :-?

It all depends on what you are looking for, for how long you are going to stay, the time of the year etc.

I love Storms River Mouth (Tsitsikamma National Park) because of the sea, but not for more than three days.

The same goes for the West Coast.

Addo is also great, but again not for more than 3/4 days.

I always wanted to go to Mapungubwe in order to feel the atmosphere and see something different, but again it is only for a limited time.

As I prefer long stays, it has to be Kruger with all its variety and then I have never really seen much of the North.

I could take a tour from one to the other, which is tempting, but the woman who has never been afraid of anything, got a scare last time, so I am not going to face the SA roads alone O-/
