There are more than 6,000 African Lions in captivity in South Africa, six times more lions than we have in the wild. These lions are kept for a variety of reasons: tourism for petting, walking-with initiatives and viewing; the shooting of captive lions in a practice commonly called ‘canned hunting’; and for supply of bones to the east for medicinal purposes. Please join Dr Kelly Marnewick as she walks you through the captive lion industry: how it works, the supply chain for lion parts, and the possible links to organised crime. She will discuss why the Endangered Wildlife Trust is concerned about the captive lion situation and what the possible impacts on wild lions could be. Kelly will also elaborate on lion conservation in South Africa, how wild lions are faring, and what is really needed to conserve these majestic big cats in South Africa.
Dr Kelly Marnewick is the Senior Trade Officer in the EWT’s Wildlife in Trade Programme. She did her PhD at the University of Pretoria on Cheetahs and African Wild Dogs. She has a keen interest in large carnivores and in the impacts of captive trade on them. She has a wide range of experience in carnivore conservation, from human-carnivore conflict to reintroductions and surveys. She is a member of the IUCN Canid Specialist Group, Cat Specialist Group and the African Lion Working Group.
