Over the past few years I have worked with a group of 4 French companies who have developed a plant identification App - to create a database for identification of Trees of South Africa!
The App is called Plantnet and work on face recognition type technology.
I am glad to announce that we have now gone live with Plantnet - Trees of South Africa!
You can download Plantnet for free from the App store or Google store (below is the logo for Plantnet), then when you open Plantnet the first time choose Trees of South Africa (at the bottom of the list of countries).
From within the App, take a close-up picture of a leaf or flower or fruit/seed - choose the category option(button) - then click on the magnifying glass for identification.
You can also take pictures where you don’t have internet signal, and then when you have signal again go into the App, and choose a picture from your gallery for identification.
It will list all the possible tree species for your picture - and the top listed ones are the most likely correct ones.
Once you have a picture identified, click on Share and then Contribute - your picture will then be submitted and listed as part of that tree - and used by Plantnet for future identification of trees (there is a verification process in place to make sure people submit the correct info, before it is used).
The more users Contribute, the more accurate Plantnet will become!
So download Plantnet, register a username and Enjoy!
