Portfolio Committee meeting yesterday (27/8/19)

Post by Lisbeth »

CONCERNED SANPARKS STAKEHOLDERS
Rouen Heiberg Snr

Feedback from Mr James Lorimer DA Shadow Min of Environmental Affairs.

"At the Portfolio Committee meeting yesterday (27/8/19) I raised the question of how many more tourist beds Sanparks intended to develop.

The answer was that apart from the Sabi Bridge, there would be no more development in the south, as “it was full”. There was still “space in the north” of the park. The format being what it is, I could not follow up. This may be information you already have."

Comment:

1.Same was said about a year or two ago. Thereafter the Selati Bridge Development was announced.

2.Wonder what happened to the Malelane Safari Resort (MSR) development announced during +- 2011 . As far as I can remember the DEA gave the developer more time (5 years ???) to obtain the funds for this development.

Gerhard Smit

The developer of the MSR venture has given up. He has now ceded his EIAs to SANParks. Meaning that SANParks may make use of them. However much water has flown down the Crocodile River since the approval by the DEA, just maybe a bit of work needs to be done before it can be resurrected.

Rouen Heiberg Snr

Is the MSR not supposed to be permanently off the cards as no more developments in the south would take place?

The conversation finishes here, today.

Lize McCourt, Chief Operating Officer of SANParks said actually that the Skukuza lodge was the last development in the South, but in the North there would be developments (with focus on attracting international young travellers)-

No questions re rhino where discussed because the committee and the minister want to keep these issues secret.

There was mentioned however that the last census figures were not released because the outcome is somewhat obscure and has to be investigated further 0*\ High mortalities and low fertility ...

And very much emphasis again on the benefit sharing with the adjacent communities (such as free equity of 10% in the Skukuza lodge)

The reports, plans, presentations will be online maybe next week.

The census results might in fact have been "obscure" ;-)
