Re: Elephant Hunting/Culling/Contraception

One should consider the context and historic baseline for elephant damage to trees: the impact to particular tree species such as Marula may appear large, but this may be due to unnaturally inflated woody species abundance prior to the immigration/reintroduction of elephants and other seedling brow...

Re: Elephant Hunting/Culling/Contraception

Please don't get the wrong idea. I am not suggesting that culling is the answer. Rather, that for those who advocate this solution, it is simply too late for it to be workable.

There are alternative views and Klippies makes a good point a few pages back.

Re: Elephant Hunting/Culling/Contraception

If the information provided by Joubert is correct then we are long past the point of no return. For now, put aside the difficulty of getting agreement to culling and the legal challenges that will arise. There are 40 000 elephant in KNP. Think of this as two groups - a maximum capacity group (MCG) o...

Re: SANParks ANNOUNCES THE ARREST OF TWO FIELD RANGERS IN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Thanks Roger.

It all makes sense now but why didn't SANParks put that in their press release? They are so obsessed with trying to dodge any negative publicity which just makes matters worse.

Re: SANParks ANNOUNCES THE ARREST OF TWO FIELD RANGERS IN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

The wording is interesting. The first paragraph suggests that this may have nothing to do with SANParks normal activities - SANParks has been informed, the nature of the charges, the involvement of the Hawks, ongoing external investigation. The involvement of the Stocktheft and Endangered Species un...

Re: Rhino Poaching 2017-2022

Searches at the gate add little value if staff are corrupt. I like to think that the gate staff try to do a good job, but EVERY vehicle needs to be searched (and occupants identities checked) and this is simply not possible without introducing staggered exit times. There also needs to be a requireme...

Re: PEOPLE AND PARKS

Am I being unfair? A photographic hide or two will be popular with a small group, there are already mountain bikes at Oliphants, small motorcycle tours with electric bikes similar to morning walks might be OK but I don't really want to see boats on Pioneer Dam.

Re: Saving rhinos

The World Bank has issued the world's first wildlife conservation bond, raising $150 million to help efforts to increase the endangered black rhino population in South Africa
And yet SA has just agreed to allow 10 black rhino to be hunted. -O-
